'Xenoblade Chronicles 2' released: JRPG storytelling in a massive world, all in the portable Nintendo Switch

"Xenoblade Chronicles 2" is one of the biggest games to hit the Nintendo Switch this month. The game is described as a massive Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) made by Monolith Soft, Monster Games, and Nintendo Software and Planning Mangement.

This JRPG is second in the critically-acclaimed franchise, but gamers do not need to be familiar with the first one to enjoy the second. It tells a standalone tale featuring the protagonist named Rex— a scavenger who discovers the power of a living weapon named Pyra.

RPG fans looking to scratch their gaming itch may find "Xenoblade Chronicles 2" as a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch's role-playing library. Its mechanics may prove a breath of fresh air from the flagship Nintendo RPG, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."

While both are action-oriented RPGs, "Xenoblade Chronicles 2" offers a different experience from the Zelda title.

For instance, while the latest Zelda title favored open-world exploration, "Xenoblade Chronicles 2" employs traditional JRPG-style storytelling. "Breath of the Wild" players can explore the world as they wish, regardless of their primary character's power level.

However, in "Xenoblade Chronicles 2," the areas that can be visited depend mainly on Rex's experience. Sure, one might stumble upon a random plain or an out-of-the-way dungeon. However, the protagonist's power level is too low — they will most likely be crushed by much stronger foes.

Still, exploring the game world remains a rewarding experience. The locals featured in "Xenoblade Chronicles 2" are diverse. People in this game live on the backs of gigantic creatures called Titans, and traveling from titan to titan is akin to traversing continents. The addition of these magnificent creatures adds a sense of mystery to the universe's lore, as well.

"Xenoblade Chronicles 2" is available now, although it only comes with the English voice acting out of the box. Nintendo is releasing the Japanese voice-acting as day-one downloadable content (DLC). The season pass bundle is available for $29.99.
