Following the unexpected flop ratings and the bombardment of critics and viewers alike on True Detective season 2, there were a lot of speculations that a next installment is not likely to happen. Casey Bloys, program head of HBO, stated at the Television Critics Association's press tour that the series is certainly "not dead" and that writer Nic Pizzolatto is ready for another season, however, for another position.

"I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects. We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet," he said.

Season 2 did not quite lived up to the success of the first installment. HBO's president of programming Michael Lombardo took the blame for the second installment's failure, stating that they should have given Pizzolatto time to produce a better story and plotline.

"Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore," he said in an interview by the Frame.

Bloys revealed that for the next season Pizzolatti will only be supervising and that they will put the responsibility for the story to another writer, who is currently writing the script, although no names are revealed for the identity of the said writer. With the lesson learned from the past season, fans can expect a better installment for the series which may premiere in Fall of 2017 on HBO.
