Fans and viewers of "The Walking Dead" will be glad to know that the zombie-apocalypse show will be returning for a ninth season later this year.

The horror-adventure series was picked up by AMC for another multi-episode installment. In addition to this news, Scott Gimple, who served as the series' showrunner, will be transitioning to another position in the "Walking Dead" universe. He will become the show's new Chief Content Officer. The person taking his place will be Angela Kang, who has been a writer for the show since 2011 and a co-executive producer since 2013.

In a recent press release, AMC President Charlie Collier expressed, "We are proud to acknowledge Angela's significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction. Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott's broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe. Together we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before."

Gimple added, "I'm honored to keep working with the talented, dedicated people behind and in front of the camera to make it all it can be." The ex-showrunner has been the driving force behind the series and was instrumental in creating the spinoff show "Fear the Walking Dead," which recently concluded its third season.

In related news, the second part of the eighth season of "The Walking Dead" will be returning in late February where the show will pick where it left off previously. It was revealed that Carl (Chandler Riggs) was bitten by a zombie and ended up resting in the sewer with the other survivors.

"The Walking Dead" season 8 episode 9 will hit the airwaves on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 9 p.m. EST on AMC. Season 9 of the groundbreaking show will arrive later this year. Fans should stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
