The movie adaptation of "The Snowman," a crime-thriller novel by Jo Nesbø, was released by Universal in the United Kingdom on Oct. 13. The film of the same title will hit U.S. theaters on Oct. 20.

The movie follows crime squad leader Harry Hole as he investigates a violent string of murders. Harry is worried that after decades of silence, the notorious killer named "The Snowman" has returned. Curious for answers, Harry goes on a series of dangerous adventures, hoping that he will eventually get to the bottom of all the weird things that have been happening.

The first official trailer was released earlier this year in July. It opens on a dark snowy evening. A young woman is walking by herself when an unseen person throws a snowball at her. She turns around and the screen fades to black. Afterward, a new scene that focuses on Harry Hole is shown and he talks about how a young woman went missing the night before. Harry then goes on to mention how they just found the body, there are no fingerprints but the woman's head is missing.

What follows is a game of cat and mouse between Harry Hole and the notorious snowman, with Harry trying to piece things together as the killer leaves him taunting messages here and there.

The movie is directed by Tomas Alfredson, who is also known for his work on the horror film "Let the Right One In." It stars Michael Fassbender as Detective Harry Hole, Rebecca Ferguson as Katrine Bratt, Charlotte Gainsbourg as Rakel Fauske, Val Kilmer as Gert Rafto, and more.

The novel the series was based on was written in 2007 and follows a similar plot. It also focuses on detective Harry Hole and an elusive killer who only strikes when it snows. The book, meanwhile, is loosely connected to the Harry Hole series, an 11-part book series that focuses on the same detective.
