Samsung Galaxy S8 release date: no more flatscreen when it arrives next year?

Samsung Galaxy S8 will not come with a flatscreen version if a new report is to be believed.

The Korea Herald cites "sources" claiming that the Samsung flagship will only have a curved screen, which is why the Edge moniker is expected to be dropped as well. The move was reportedly prompted after the higher sales of the Galaxy S7 Edge compared to the standard version.

The publication added that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will come in two sizes — 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch — both expected to have curved displays.

Although still unconfirmed, this reflects the statement made by Samsung Mobile business head of Koh Dong-jin last month, as reported by Android Authority, with regards to the concept of curved screens being the norm in the company from now on.

He was quoted as saying, "Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions."

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7, which only came with a curved display version, was reportedly used to test the waters in going full-on curved for Samsung's next flagships, although the transition to Edge may not be done as early as the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Before the issue of the Note 7's exploding battery came to light, which led to a global recall, the device broke records and was highly in demand.

In South Korea, over 200,000 pre-orders were placed within the first couple of days, as per Sam Mobile. Supplies in several countries like Malaysia, The Netherlands, Russia, and Ukraine quickly ran out, leading to delays.

With the crystal clear success of the Note 7, it looks like users do not mind having a curved-screened model as the only option for the phablet. Whether or not this reflects Samsung's plans for the Galaxy S8 remains to be seen.

Another factor which Samsung reportedly considers before going full-Edge on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and its future smartphone offerings is the accessibility of a sufficient amount of parts for the curved displays.

For now, however, there's no official word from Samsung about its plans on the Galaxy S8, which won't be released for a few months. As for the specs of the flagship, it is expected to don a 4K Ultra HD display, 6GB of RAM, and a dual camera setup.
