Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date, rumors: 2017 release expected, Microsoft to focus on Surface PC in October event

It seems Microsoft will wait until next year to lift the veil off the Surface Pro 5. The said device was initially expected to be launched next month, a year after its predecessor was unveiled.

There are words doing rounds, claiming that Microsoft will still do an October event, but it will be all about the Surface All-in-One PC. It looks like it is the only major product that the Redmond-based software giant plans to launch.

Microsoft analyst Mary Jo Foley reports that the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will be saved for 2017 instead, along with the Microsoft Surface Book 2 and the Microsoft Surface Band 3.

Foley also reported a few months back that Microsoft will devote its October event for Windows 10 devices from OEMs, although it will also reportedly release updated versions of current Surface devices.

This means that the Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4 might get upgrades in the form of faster processors and additional features. This will help Microsoft keep its line fresh while waiting for full-blown successors.

The delay of the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 was also reportedly made necessary to accommodate the wait for the Redstone 2 update for Windows 10, which the company wants to take advantage of in order to integrate new features on the hybrid tablet.

With regards to processor, the new Microsoft Surface Pro is expected to use the Kaby Lake processor that is already being officially rolled out.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is expected to be released in spring next year. Around that time, the Cannonlake, the eighth-generation processor from Intel still won't be available as it is set for release in the second half of 2017.

That being said, Microsoft will likely stick with the Kaby Lake for the 2-in-1 device. The chipset is powerful enough to support 4K display and playback while delivering faster performance with lower power consumption, allowing for longer battery life.
