One of the most anticipated devices for business users and PC enthusiast this year is Microsoft's latest 2-in-1 laptop, the Microsoft Surface Pro 5. Unfortunately, the company has remained tight-lipped about its development, and even more so regarding its possible release date.

This has led to countless reports which have tried to predict the device's release date, with some predicting a release this month, while others point to a more realistic early 2017 release.

The device itself is now technically overdue as the current generation Surface Pro laptop — the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 — is already more than a year old. Some reports have speculated that there may be several underlying reasons as to why Microsoft has intentionally delayed the release of the Surface Pro 5.

Intel has yet to release their latest generation Kaby Lake processor to the public, however, the company may have already shipped the new generation chips to several manufacturers just recently. Microsoft may have been one of those companies, and they may have very well delayed the release of the Surface Pro 5 in order for them to incorporate the new processors.

Having a Kaby Lake processor on board instead of the current generation Skylake chips would be a win-win situation for Microsoft as the new chips will not only boost their device's performance- it will also resolve its possible battery issues.

Another reason for the apparent delay is that the company themselves have not yet finished developing their latest Windows 10 update, dubbed the Redstone 2 update. It is likely that the company would want to launch the new software update itself along with their brand new hardware in the form of the new Surface Pro 5 laptop.

The Redstone 2 update is expected to be released during the first quarter of 2017, which is around the same time some reports have predicted that the Surface Pro 5 will be released as well.
