Microsoft Surface Phone rumors, speculations: Two new patents may indicate possible release of foldable device

Rumors about the features and specifications of the Microsoft Surface Phone are all over the internet. Recently, another alleged feature of the device is leaked on the web. If this is indeed true, it will have a huge edge compared to existing mobile phones these days.

Microsoft was recently granted two patents wherein both are related to a camera setup for a folding smartphone. One of the patents uses a magnet, while the other is a mechanical flap, reports reveal.

The patented device will sport a camera sensor on one side, while the other side features an optical arrangement. The design of the device is shown in a flat open position at a 180-degree angle between the surfaces.

The first concept will allow two different camera modes. Both sides use magnets that will hold them together. The two parts of the unit can actually function as a standalone device. Once they are connected using the magnet, they will form together in order to perform the second operational mode.

The second patent has a similar concept. However, it will use a mechanical latch instead of a magnet. There are also two possible modes wherein the other mode can be achieved when the mechanical flap exposes the second camera. Both patents for the Microsoft Surface Phone are considered as a major hint at the possible release of the device. However, there is no confirmation yet if it is currently in the works or if the device will be released soon.

To recall, there were reports that the Windows 10 Mobile is already dead. But contrary to that report, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella revealed last year that the company will continue making a mobile device. Nadella also said that they want to bring something different in the device category.

"We don't want to be driven by just envy of what others have, the question is, what can we bring? That's where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI," he said, in an interview with The Australian Financial Review.

Also, technology enthusiasts never cease to believe that a new phone will be released by the Redmond-based technology giant. OnMSFT notes that although the leaked patent is trivial, it can be an early indication that Microsoft is exploring a future foldable device.
