iPad mini 5 release date news: September launch still happening?; Big upgrades expected

The iPad mini is reportedly getting massive upgrades as Apple renews its commitment to the brand despite the possibility that the iPad Air will no longer be updated.

Despite the lack of news about the iPad mini 5, it is being said that it will be one of the scene-stealing products to be unveiled by Apple next month.

The tablet will allegedly share the spotlight with the iPhone 7 as well as the Apple Watch 2 in next month's big event of the Cupertino-based company.

The iPad mini 5 will reportedly be thinner than its predecessor and will be fitted out with the A9 processor, an upgrade from its predecessor's A8 chipset, which provided decent performance.

It will no longer get a 16GB version and will instead offer 32GB storage for its entry-level model. A 64GB version and a bigger 128GB variant are expected to be made available as well.

More on the hardware, the tablet will be made more durable with an IP68 rating. With this, the device will be resistant to both dust and water, keeping the sleek look of the iPad mini 5 untainted while making it more resilient.

Another exciting upgrade coming to the next-generation iPad mini is the 3D Touch display. The latest Apple releases already have it in tow and the company would want to keep its products in line.

Unlike the iPad mini 5, the iPad Air 3 is said to have the greater chances to be at the chopping block, especially since it already released an iPad Pro model a 9.7-inch display, the same size of display as the iPad Air.

However, KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple is releasing three versions of the iPad Pro this year – one of which is a low-cost version with that same display size.

It is unclear what this means for the iPad mini 5, but since Apple still released an iPad mini 4 last year but did not release an iPad Air 3, the company looks to still be determined to expand its smaller tablet family.
