'Harley Quinn' movie news: experienced spin-off writer signs on

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in 'Suicide Squad' DC Comics

Despite having mixed reviews and the occasional haters here and there, the previously released anti-hero movie, "Suicide Squad," has garnered a whopping $745 million in gross sales worldwide. With the success of the movie, Warner has previously announced that there was in fact going to be a spin-off movie that will be focusing mainly on the character Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. Now, new reports have revealed that there may be some new developments with the production of the upcoming "Harley Quinn" movie.

The team behind the upcoming spin-off movie has reportedly hired a new writer who is no stranger to penning scripts for spin-off films. According to reports, movie writer Christina Hodson was apparently brought on board to work on the project. As previously mentioned, Hodson is quite familiar with creating scripts for spin-offs as she is also the one writing the script for the upcoming "Transformers" spin-off, "Bumblebee." The writer has also reportedly worked on the script for the reboot of "The Fugitive," which will also be produced by Warner.

While it's still quite early to speculate on the possible plot of the upcoming film, several reports have claimed that the movie might not necessarily just revolve around the life of the baseball bat-wielding psychopath in fish-net stockings. According to some reports, the movie could essentially be a "Birds of Prey" movie which will feature other female villains in the DC universe, including Katana, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Circe. The claim is, of course, a mere speculation for now and the project could involve all or none of the aforementioned DC villains.

The upcoming movie will be produced by Robbie's own production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Warner within a first-look agreement. Warner essentially has the first option to get on board any project that Robbie's company will undertake, and it seems like the company is full steam ahead with Robbie's very own spin-off movie.
