'Guacamelee 2' update: New abilities include 'Chicken Shot' and 'Eagle Boost'

Seven years after defeating Carlos Calaca, Juan Aguacate is forced to don his luchador mask again to face a new threat -- this time to the very fabric of space and time.

During the Paris Games week, DrinkBox Studios surprised everyone when they revealed that a sequel to one of 2013's most popular game, "Guacamelee!" will get a new sequel titled "Guacamelee 2." Set seven years after the events of the first game, players will again control the luchador/farmer "Juan Aquate" as he attempts to save the universe once again.

An announcement trailer was also released for "Guacamelee 2," and it looks like the game will still feature the same gameplay loop and art style by its predecessor, but enhanced with new abilities and maneuvers. Also, "Guacamelee 2" will feature a four-player coop throughout the game.

Some of the new abilities "Juan the Luchador" can use in the upcoming game include the ability to use the "Chicken Shot" fighting moves when transformed into a chicken. Juan's chicken-transforming ability was already introduced in the first installment, although at that time it was heavily underutilized.

A new maneuver called "Eagle Boost" will also be introduced. Basically, it helps Juan bounce around the levels of the game by acting as a grappling hook. It is somewhat tricky especially in the four-player coop mode, so players must be wary about that.

Additionally, "Guacamelee 2" will feature a new "Dimensional Waves" mechanic, where scrolling bars move across the screen in order for the same level to be represented through different dimensions. This requires a fair bit of thinking and creativity for players, so they could successfully solve these following puzzles when they appear.

In other news, it looks like "Guacamelee 2" is going to be a PlayStation 4-exclusive game, as it was announced at a PlayStation event. However, the possibility of the game making it to other platforms was not really denied by DrinkBox, but then again the first Guacamelee game was first released on PS3 and Vita in 2013 before coming to other platforms 15 months later.

When asked by Destructoid, DrinkBox co-founder Graham Smith said: "We're currently completely focused on the PS4/PS4 Pro versions of Guacamelee 2, and aren't announcing any other platforms at this time."
Although no official release date has been set yet, "Guacamelee 2" is said to come soon-ish according to the trailer. This may mean the game may hit the public in early 2018.
