To those who have a weird curiosity about the life and goings-on of ants, a new strategy game called "Empires of the Undergrowth" may be the perfect game for them. What is more, the game now has an early access date, hitting Steam's Early Access program on Dec. 1.

"Taking clear inspiration from classics such as SimAnt and Dungeon Keeper, players will be able to dig through the earth, build tunnels and chambers, hunt for food and raise large colonies," the game's press release stated.

"Above ground, players need to send their ants on long missions, far from the nest to secure and defend lucrative resources. The mechanics are more accessible than your typical RTS; control of your ants is achieved by placing pheromone markers, and gives the colony a more realistic, natural feeling."

The players' mission is to build, expand, and ensure the survival of their ant colony also while defending their lair from various predators. The game's narrative was also told in a documentary point of view, inspired by famous narrator David Attenborough.

The gameplay is featured on both below and above ground. Below, the players' responsibilities entail ensuring their queen ant's safety, properly storing food, exploring and excavating tunnels to expand the colony, and interacting with fellow ants.

Meanwhile, the gameplay above ground mainly revolves around fighting and expelling foes that threaten the colony's survival, from different types of insects, arachnids, and even rival colonies. Players must perfect the teamwork between all the ants in the colony to properly defend their lair, as well as ensuring its survival.

According to the game's official website, players must be extra vigilant as the game is in a "fast-paced real-time strategy style." In the game's early access, players will encounter the primary game mode called "Formicarium."

"Empires of the Undergrowth" will be available for download on Steam's Early Access on Dec. 1.
