'Despicable Me 3' spoilers: New villain to be voiced by Trey Parker

Despicable Me 3 Universal Pictures

During this year's CinemaCon, Universal Pictures revealed several key details regarding "Despicable Me 3," the latest installment in their highly successful animated franchise. As reported by Cinema Blend, the studio not only revealed that the main character Gru (Steve Carell) has a long-lost twin brother but that the main villain will be voiced by "South Park" co-creator and voice actor Trey Parker

Parker will be voicing the character Balthazar Bratt, who has been revealed to be a former child star of the 1980s. When he hit puberty, the world moved on without him, and his show got cancelled. Bratt, now an angered adult, seeks to rule the world to ensure that no one could ever mock him again.

It is speculated that Bratt's appearance will once again force the Anti-Villain League to hire Gru, a former supervillain, and his legion of Minions to stop Bratt. However, this time around, Gru will be working alongside his long-lost twin brother, Drew, who will also be voiced by Steve Carell.

According to the report, Drew looks exactly like Gru except that he has long blond hair and wears all-white instead of black and grey. It is undetermined at this point how the brothers were separated, what kind of criminal or heroic career Drew had followed growing up, and if Drew is connected to Bratt in any way.

The main theme of the movie is said to focus on sibling rivalry and while this indicates an emphasis on Drew and Gru, it is also likely to be reflected with Balthazar Bratt's story.

Illumination Entertainment executive Chris Meledandri explained that working with Parker for "Despicable Me 3" was a pleasant experience since there was no need to further edit or re-work any of Parker's lines. This stems from the fact that Parker is well-versed in voice acting, having worked on "South Park" for 19 seasons and counting.

"Despicable Me 3" opens in theaters on June 30, 2017.
