Windows 10 updates: Microsoft delays mobile upgrade to early 2016

Users who want to see the Windows 10 Mobile in action this early will have to purchase Microsoft's latest Lumia phones such as the Lumia 950, 950 XL or Lumia 550. This is because the software giant has delayed its scheduled December rollout for the firmware to older Windows phones.

Sadly, Microsoft provided no clarification or reason explaining the postponement. "This November we introduced Windows 10 to phones including brand new features such as Continuum and Universal Windows Apps with the introduction of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL," a spokesperson for the company told ZDNet.

"The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones," it added, confirming the hold-up. Microsoft has long promised the Windows 10 Mobile will land this month.

Engadget would like to believe that the postponement of the firmware release is simply the company's attempt to buff up the software and make sure it is ready for public consumption. The site says that during its Windows 10 Mobile experience on the Lumia 950, there were glaring glitches that needed to be fixed.

For now, Microsoft is giving access to the raw software to users registered to Windows Insiders. It recently released its latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586, which helps the Redmond-based tech titan polish the software before its official release.

This update will apparently be the final one for this year. This is because the engineers and developers at the company will be going on their holiday breaks to spend and enjoy the Christmas season with their families.

That being said, the Windows 10 update teams will be "running at a slower pace." Windows 10 updates should resume in January. As for the Windows 10 Mobile updates on older Lumias, there is yet to be a specific date and list of devices officially getting the software.
