Volkswagen unveiled their newest flagship sedan, the Arteon, with a respectable but somewhat underwhelming 276-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. This left car enthusiasts wanting for more. Thankfully, a high-performance Arteon R model has been confirmed to be in development.

In an interview with Car Throttle, Volkswagen product line spokesman Marin Hube confirmed that the German automaker is working on a more powerful six-cylinder model for the upcoming fastback sedan. He further revealed that an Arteon prototype has already been fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that is able to produce 404 horsepower.

"I'm totally convinced that this combination is extremely nice. We've combined it with the latest version of the Haldex [four-wheel drive system] where you can provoke a bit of oversteer. This is a real agile, powerful car," he said.

Upon its release sometime next year, the VR6-powered Arteon R will likely be designated as the range-topping model. It is touted to compete with the likes of the Kia Stinger GT, Ford Mustang GT, and the Porsche Panamera. However, it is unlikely that this particular model will be offered in the United States.

As for the standard Volkswagen Arteon, it is expected to arrive at U.S. dealers in summer 2018.

The premium four-door vehicle is built using the automaker's modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, which translates to a longer wheelbase. Thus, the five-seat fastback is able to offer more legroom and luggage space compared to conventional sedans.

Design-wise, the Arteon is dynamic, elegant and athletic. The front fascia features a hood that extends up to the fenders and radiator grille. Meanwhile, the chrome accents, LED headlights and LED daytime running lights to give the vehicle a powerful appearance. Volkswagen's new sedan is also reminiscent of a sports car with its muscular fenders, prominent shoulders, flared wheel arches and aluminum-alloy wheels.

Standard features include stainless steel door kickplates, air conditioning, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, six-way power adjustable front seats and an infotainment system.

Pricing and technical specifications for the U.S. market have yet to be revealed.
