'Threadworlds': 'Legend of Korra' creator to write graphic novel

A year after "The Legend of Korra" was concluded, Emmy Award-winning writer Bryan Konietzko announced  that he was ready to take up another project: a graphic novel entitled "Threadworlds."

First Second Books will publish the first volume in 2017.

Konietzko earlier collaborated with Michael Dante DiMartino, in conceptualizing "Avatar: The Last Airbender" in 2001. They pitched the idea to Nickelodeon a few weeks after.

Both were also involved in producing, writing and animating the three seasons of Avatar and four seasons of Legend of Korra. For "Threadworlds," however, Konietzko, 40, is going solo.

The writer revealed that he was pondering over what his next project would be and, for years, was toying around with a sci-fi idea when the concept of "Threadworlds" popped up. The idea gave him a way to "weave" genres together.

The new graphic novel will revolve around Nova, a young scientist who lives in a planet with some of the most outdated technology among the five planets within its solar system. Each of the planets are teeming with various species of intelligent life, which makes Nova's coming adventures an interesting one. "This is basically Nova's long origin story as scientific superhero. I hope she'll be inspiring to readers of all genders and ages," Konietzko told Entertainment Weekly.

The writer will also do his own illustrations for this novel. "It is likely that on later volumes, I'll be bringing in some other artists to help me draw and color, but for now I'm really enjoying the task of doing it alone while I can," he said.

"The illustration process is somewhat akin to the work I've done in animation as an art director, designer and storyboard artist," Konietzko added.

When asked what can be expected of his new novel, Konietzko said: "Though the focus is on science, there will be plenty of action and adventure. That's definitely me being true to myself as a creator."
