In the next episode of "This Is Us," it is revealed what transpired before patriarch Jack Pearson's untimely death and how his family copes with that awful tragedy.

The trailer and promotional photos for the upcoming installment, which is titled "Across the Border," were released just recently, and they show Jack discovering that there is a terrible fire in their house. He slowly inches toward the kitchen and covers his mouth, as he sees smoke seeping in from under the door. When he opens it, a blazing fire greets him with ferocity as he backs away from it. He goes and checks on his children and is shocked to see his daughter Kate (Chrissy Metz) trapped in her room. His son Randall (Sterling K. Brown) is also in a bind himself. His wife Rebecca (Mandy Moore) rushes to get damp clothes to protect her family.

Jack manages to get Randall out but now has to rescue his daughter. He tries to get through another way but when he opens the door, a huge fire blocks his path and surges at him. It is strongly hinted that Jack was able to save his family but will perish in the fire. In the present day, Rebecca and her grown-up kids pay tribute to their father on the day he died which was after the Superbowl.

In the last episode, Jack was very excited to spend the day with his family watching the Superbowl. However, the kids ended up spending the night with other people which left only his wife at home. Nevertheless, Jack just brushed that off and the parents went to bed after watching the game. A fire later started because of a defective rice cooker.

"This is Us" season 2 episode 14 will hit the airwaves on Sunday, Feb. 4, after the 52nd Superbowl on NBC.
