'The Leftovers' season 3 news: Show creator promises 'definitive end' for series

As it turns out, the hit fantasy mystery-thriller "The Leftovers" was meant to last for only three seasons. This is purely the decision of Damon Lindelof, who created the HBO drama based on Tom Perrotta's novel of the same name.

"It's a gut instinct," Lindelof told HitFix about the show coming to a premeditated conclusion. "I feel like there's more story, but not MUCH more. And I don't want to drag it out unnecessarily," he went on to say.

Lindelof also recognized the fact that some viewers felt like the second season was like a set-up to the show's conclusion. This is because the season gave them the impression that they are closer to the ending than the beginning. And their hunch was spot on with "The Leftovers" season 3 wrapping up the entire series.

The show creator sees the first season as the beginning, the second season as the middle and the third season as the end. This has always been the arrangement he had in mind when he created "The Leftovers" with Perrotta.

Lindelof promised (via Esquire) that "The Leftovers" season 3 will be a "definitive end" to the series. "And by definitive, we mean wildly ambiguous and hopefully mega-emotional," he explained.

It is being said that the third and final season of the series will be much like the second season in terms of putting viewers in a whole new realm with unfamiliar set of faces. In the previous seasons, viewers got a good look of Jarden, Texas and Miracle National Park.

"The Leftovers" season 3 is expected to introduce a whole new and certainly stranger ground. Bustle, on the other hand, is under the impression that not every question will be answered, although it will still be exciting to know what the Departure really is.

In the season 2 finale, Garvey's family was reunited while the Murphy clan was spaced out. What's next for the two families? That will only be answered with "The Leftovers" season 3, which unfortunately does not have a premiere date yet.
