This was the year for some big-screen adaptations to Stephen King's famous works. One of which was "The Dark Tower," which starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. While it fared well commercially, it was not as well-received critically. However, that is not going to stop Elba from reprising his role as Gunslinger Roland Deschain.
A small-screen adaptation of "The Dark Tower" books is currently in development, but Elba shared that he wanted to reprise his role in a sequel. Speaking to Radio Times, Elba said that he would personally prefer to do another "Dark Tower" installment and exploring his character even further in a film. While he does not know much about the television series that will be based on the books, he thinks that a sequel will be made.
"I think there's definitely talks to try and do another one," said Elba.
The film adaptation has had its time in development hell. Much like some franchise installments, it has also had its share of gaining and losing directors. J.J. Abrams was initially attached to direct the film back in 2007. By 2010, Ron Howard signed on to direct, and the film stayed in development for five years before Sony decided to fast-track the film to 2015 with Nikolaj Arcel helming the project.
Whether or not "The Dark Tower" film could get a sequel remains to be seen. For now, Elba will be reprising his role as Heimdall in the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok" which will be in November.
As previously mentioned, the disappointment fans felt towards the film does not seem to be a hindrance towards the development of the TV series. So it might be understandable to see that the series will become a rebooted version.
The initial idea for the series was to pick up where the film left off. Arcel was also involved in the project and when "The Dark Tower" premiered in theaters, he revealed that he took part in writing the pilot episode along with ideas for the first season as well as the second episode. Arcel went on to say that they can really stay true to the source material on the show while making a standalone movie.
It seems like the series will have some connection to the film, but knowing that the show is going to be a reboot, there may no longer be a connection.
"The Walking Dead's" Glen Mazzara has been tapped to become the showrunner for "The Dark Tower" series. The official premiere date of its first season has yet to be determined.
