'Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie release date news: Production to begin in 2019?

The upcoming Han Solo spin-off titled "Solo: A Star Wars Story" will supposedly be followed by the spin-off movie of one of the greatest Jedi masters in the "Star Wars" universe. It seems that production for the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff is scheduled to begin come 2019.

Lucasfilm is reportedly developing a standalone movie set in the "Star Wars" universe that focuses on both Anakin and Luke Skywalker's mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Stephen Daldry, who directed "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," is being considered to helm the movie.

As of now, the spin-off is still in its first stages of development so it is understandable that details surrounding the upcoming film are very scarce. Production may already have a director in mind, but no one has been confirmed to write the script yet. Should Daldry sign on for the spin-off, then he will get involved with the development and writing.

According to Omega Underground, production is said to begin in the early part of 2019, after the premiere of "Star Wars: Episode 9." If that is the case, then the spin-off could premiere by 2020.

On the other hand, Lucasfilm has not commented on the Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film so whether or not this movie will really get made remains to be seen. The studio is also said to be developing more standalone films outside the trilogies involving the Skywalker family, such as a Yoda solo film and perhaps one featuring the iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett.

There is no confirmation either that Ewan McGregor, who portrayed the Jedi master in the franchise's prequel trilogy, will reprise his role in this one. But he did express interest in wanting to play the role again back in April.

McGregor shared that it would be a good transition between the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. Knowing that "Rogue One" was a blockbuster hit, this a good way to tie everything together.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off does not have an official release date yet.
