Just before "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hits theaters, it has been announced that Rian Johnson will be directing a new "Star Wars" trilogy. Although it is not yet revealed what the new story canon will be all about, in a new interview, the 43-year-old director talked about his plans for the movie series.

"We were just generally talking about what we could do," the filmmaker told Collider. While talking with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy and other people from Disney, he revealed that he is interested in creating a new trilogy.

Although it was not really a pitch, he suggested that they could make three new movies with one story, new characters, and new places. "Let's start fresh," he said. And as Kennedy seemed interested, they ended up "giving it a shot."

Creating a new "Star Wars" canon is, probably, the biggest decision Disney and Lucasfilm have ever made after the announcement of the current sequel trilogy. This will surely affect the movie franchise whether fans will accept it or not.

It has been said that the new trilogy will not be about the Skywalker story. So, it will be the first movie series that will go beyond the original trilogy's narrative.

However, Johnson admitted that he still has no idea what the new "Star Wars" trilogy would be all about. He even revealed that he does not know yet how it will be differently categorized compared to its predecessors. "For me, the exciting thing about the new trilogy is the notion of how wide open it is and the idea of what can we create," he continued to say.

With that, some reports predict that it could be the introduction of the Gray Jedi. As Johnson was asked about this, he reportedly just answered with a "smirk." "We'll see when we get into the movie a little bit," he said. However, he promised that he would be following Luke's line, thus it will definitely be about the Jedi and "their place in the universe."
