'Star Wars Episode IX' plot news: Franchise director suggests Rey's parentage could still change

"Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi" kept the tradition of obscure parentage, though a lot of fans were apparently left disappointed with how the movie handled the reveal of Rey's (Daisy Ridley) true parents. This is why the director of "The Last Jedi" has revealed that the next sequel is considering rectifying the canon set up recently.

In an interview with Huffington Post, director Rian Johnson claimed, "Anything's still open, and I'm not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it." This was his answer to whether the reveal for Rey's parents in "The Last Jedi" was final and official.

This could lead to a lot of possibilities as to whoever Rey's true parents could be, meaning it could either be some key figurehead either in the Resistance or the First Order, perhaps even the Sith. It would then be similar to how Darth Vader was revealed to be Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) father during the most iconic twist in the whole saga.

This could also mean that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) might have been just misleading Rey when they shared the force vision in "The Last Jedi" which revealed Rey's parents. That said, this contradicts Johnson's statement to Collider that he believed Ren to be telling the truth and was just not being too specific.

Johnson also stated that if Rey were to be revealed to be connected biologically to a major "Star Wars" character, then the twist would be similar in scope to the one between Luke and Vader.

For those who have watched the movie, it was revealed in "The Last Jedi" that Rey's parents were simply a junk trader couple in the desert planet Jakku who sold her to possibly fuel their vices. While this could subjectively give a lot more existential meaning for Rey's character, it still left some fans disappointed since "Episode VII: The Force Awakens" kept teasing some significant and obscure past for the femme fatale.

Fans will get to see whether J.J. Abrams will do something different for Rey once "Star Wars Episode IX" gets released on Dec. 20, 2019.
