Samsung W2018 set for release with latest specs; luxury flip phone to be launched in China

Samsung recently unveiled the newest addition to their line of high-end flip phones. Called the W2018, the phone is the latest in the Samsung W series. It also serves as a commemorative model for the series' 10th year anniversary.

The most sophisticated part of the Samsung W2018 is its rear camera, which can take stunning pictures even in dim light. The 12-megapixel camera is equipped with Optical Image Stabilization. It can also switch between two aperture modes, f/1.5 and f/2.4.

The installed software on the phone determines when to switch between these modes. The f/2.4 aperture is used when there is sufficient lighting, and the camera turns to f/1.5 in low-light settings. This enables the phone to take sharp and clear photos, even at night.

Beside the rear camera is a fingerprint scanner for security. The phone also has a 5-megapixel front camera. A Bixby button is included, a feature used for voice commands. It also comes pre-installed on the Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system.

The Samsung W2018 is a flip phone, so describing its dimensions can be a bit tricky. Unfolded, it measures at 132.2 millimeters (mm) by 63.2 mm. Folded, that measurement shrinks to 15.9 mm.

The phone has two displays. The front display is a High Definition Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (HD AMOLED) display, and the inner display is in full HD, as well. Both screens measure 4.2 inches. The Samsung W2018 also has directional keys set above a classic numerical keypad.

The phone comes with two storage options. The Extreme model has 64 GB of storage, while the Collector Edition has 256 GB. Both models have 6 GB of random access memory (RAM) and are run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor.

All of these are housed in a metal and glass body, protected by Gorilla Glass. Gold and platinum color variants are available.

The Samsung W2018 will be distributed in China first, and there have yet to be announcements for international distribution. No pricing details have been released yet, but it should be noted that the phone's predecessor, the Samsung W2017, costs $3000.
