Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) rumors: Upcoming smartphone spotted on GFXBench, features Android Oreo, Exynos 7885

After the launch of Samsung's mid-range smartphone lineup this year, the focus will not shift to the company's entry-level Galaxy handsets. The upcoming handset from the South Korean tech firm, the Galaxy J8 (2018), has been spotted on a benchmarking website, revealing its hardware specs and features. The device is said to run the latest Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out of the box, and to be powered by Samsung's very own Exynos 7885 processor.

Galaxy Club was able to obtain the benchmark listing of the Samsung Galaxy J8 from GFXBench. The model number of the alleged Galaxy J8 smartphone in the spotted benchmark listings is SM-J720F, which makes it appear that the device is a new variant of the current J7 phone.

However, the model number of the U.S. version of Galaxy J7 is SM-J727, while the international variants of the phone in the past two years are numbered as SM-J710F and SM-J730F. This suggests that the recent smartphone in the GFXBench listing is not a U.S.-only model, and is likely to be the rumored Galaxy J8 (2018) handset. The phone will be named as such to make its name in sync with the recently launched mid-range smartphones by Samsung, the Galaxy A8 and A8+.

According to reports, the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) will be powered by the new version of Exynos 7885 SoC, the same mobile chipset used by the current Samsung devices. The enhanced Exynos chip will come with an octa-core central processing unit with 1.6GHz clock speed and Mali G-71 graphics processing unit. These are the same specs packed into the Galaxy A8 and A8+ smartphones, suggesting that the Galaxy J8 will be more than an entry-level device in terms of performance. The benchmark listing shows that J8 having 4 GB of random access memory (RAM) and 32 GB internal storage.

The Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) is said to sport a 5.5-inch HD screen with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Interestingly, this would be a downgrade from the recent Galaxy J7 Pro smartphone with 1080 FHD display. The J8 camera features a 12-megapixel rear sensor and 8-megapixel front-facing shooter, although it is still possible that the front camera will have a dual-lens setup, based on earlier rumors. Both cameras will have FHD 1080p video capture capabilities. Lastly, the Galaxy J8 will be pre-installed with the Android Oreo OS update.

It is expected that the Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018) will be launched before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, where the flagship Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones are likely to appear. MWC will be held in Barcelona, Spain from Feb. 26 to March 1.
