'Rick and Morty' writer says that fans may have to wait until late 2019 for the fourth season

Fans of popular animated series "Rick and Morty" may have to prepare for a pretty long wait for the show's fourth season.

In an interview made by Detroit Cast with the show's writer Ryan Ridley, he mentioned that nobody in production has even started working on the script. An order for the fourth season has also yet to be done, indicating that the show's fourth season may see its earliest release in 2019.

"They really take their time. I never understood why everybody — all parties, Dan [Harmon], Justin [Roiland], and Adult Swim — didn't get their shit together, and make the show fast. I just don't get it. It doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sure they all have their reasons," said Ridley in the radio interview.

However, fans shouldn't worry about the show putting on a shelf, as "Rick and Morty" co-creator Dan Harmon revealed to Polygon last October at the New York Comic-Con that there would indeed be a fourth season, although he declined to mention the start of production date.

"I want to prove it with the first 10 [episodes] of season four — prove it to ourselves, to production, to the network — that it's so easy that we'll earn additional episodes," Harmon said.

The long wait may exceed the hiatus between the second and third season of the show, which is a year and a half.

"Rick and Morty" is under the adult-oriented programming block under Cartoon Network Adult Swim, and they are known for their incredible slow pace of production process. "The Venture Bros.," which is also under Adult Swim, is also known for the years-apart wait for each season.

According to Ridley, fans shouldn't expect any new episodes of the show this year because after writing the script for season three, it then took another eight months for the show to be produced. The animation process of the show is also one of the factors why it takes so long.

Since season three, "Rick and Morty" became even more popular, even having its own cultural phenomenon, but the folks behind Adult Swim may have to worry about losing some of their fans if they don't get to work and still slack off.

Because of this, Ridley said that the network and all the significant people behind "Rick and Morty" should "get their shit together" and "put it in a backpack.
