Nokia 9 release date, specs rumors: Leaked FCC filing reveals 5.5-inch OLED display, Android Oreo

The rumors are rife that the next flagship Nokia smartphone is coming up soon. Further supporting the expected launch early next year is the recently leaked Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing. The documents show the brand new design and features of the device, including a 5.5-inch OLED display and Android Oreo OS update.

When a tech firm formally submits the patent documents for a device to the FCC, this means that the release is imminent. The patent filing for the Nokia 9 was posted by Liliputing, giving the public an idea of what to expect from the newly-revived mobile phone label. To recall, HMD Global has taken over the Nokia brand, which brought the premium Nokia 8 handset and the mid-range Nokia 8 last year.

The Nokia 9 is revealed to sport a 5.5-inch OLED display. The FCC documents show that the OLED panel used for the smartphone is manufactured by LG, suggesting a huge improvement over the Nokia 8's IPS LCD-powered screen. Looking at the device's core specs, the Nokia 9 will boast high-power performance via Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset.

Other specs of the Nokia 9 include a 3,250mAh battery and 128GB worth of internal storage. The FCC filing did not indicate how much RAM capacity the smartphone has. Although, an appended screenshot of the Nokia 9 render reveals that the handset will run the latest Android 8.0 Oreo OS out of the box.

In terms of the camera, the Nokia 9 will highlight a rear dual-lens camera, just like its predecessor. Specifically, the dual camera is a combination of 12MP and 12MP shooters, while the front-positioned camera will receive a 5MP lens. Aside from the camera resolution, the filing did not show other features of the Nokia snapper, although Tech Radar reported that the smartphone's dual camera will include a 2x telephoto zoom and wide-angle camera option.

The FCC documents for the Nokia 9 did not specify an exact release date and price of the handset. However, it is speculated that HMD Global's next flagship offering will arrive in the early months of 2018.
