Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date, specs rumors: Reports predict either an October 2016 or an early 2017 release date

Given the fact that Microsoft has not yet officially announced the release date of their upcoming new 2-in-1 laptop computer — the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 — there are now numerous contradicting reports which have predicted different dates for the device's release. Some reports say that the device will likely be launched sometime next year due to several reasons, while other reports predict a release that could be as early as next month.

The upcoming device's predecessor — the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 — certainly received mostly positive reviews and had sold more than 275,000 units during the first few months after it was released. It had even outsold its main rival — the Apple iPad Pro — which sold only 107,000 during the same first quarter of 2016. The current generation Surface Pro is of course not without its flaws as some units apparently had some battery issues among other shortcomings.

Microsoft is expected to resolve those issues with the addition of Intel's next generation processor, the Kaby Lake-based CPU. The new processor will not only significantly increase the device's performance, but also increase its overall battery life due to its lower power consumption compared to its predecessor.

However, the main issue with this option is that Intel is still planning to release the new CPU later in the year, which has been interpreted by some as the main reason for a likely 2017 release of the new Surface Pro 5.

On the other hand, some reports have speculated that the company may have found a way around Intel's delayed release and that it may be launching the new Surface Pro 5 next month.

The basis for the claims seems to be the increasing discounts the company has been offering for the current generation Surface Pro, indicating its preparations for the arrival of the new version. The reports also claim that Microsoft is apparently planning a big October launch event that may very well include the launch of the long-rumored new Microsoft Surface.
