In the past few weeks, a flurry of details about the so-called Microsoft Surface Phone flooded the web but the titanic software company's Surface head Panos Panay is not very keen on talking about the smartphone just yet.

In his interview with Geek Wire, Panay was careful not to let anything slip, thus shying away from confirming the existence of the expected first handset in the Surface family. "We're working on a lot of stuff," he said, emphasizing that most of which are for the Lumia and Surface line.

"It really is about bringing them all together with a consistent feeling and making sure the experiences across Microsoft come to our customers. We have a lot to offer and a lot to do, but I don't want to get trapped into, here's what the next thing is, because that's not exactly where I'll go," he added.

While Panay won't talk about the Microsoft Surface Phone, rumor mills attempt to fill the gap. Nokia Power User has received word from unnamed sources that the handset will have two versions, the other one expected to sport a bigger display.

This purported bigger version is being dubbed the Microsoft Surface Phone XL and is reported to boast a breathtaking 2K Quad HD display that measures 5.5 or 6 inches, relatively larger than the 5.2-inch screen on the standard version.

The other aspect that differentiates the two is the possibility that the Microsoft Surface Phone XL will come with Surface Pen compatibility. Other than that, users can expect the devices to feature an identical specs sheet.

This starts with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor under their hood, although others say that Intel will be providing the hardware of the flagship. There should be 3 GB to 4 GB RAM as well as 32 GB and 64 GB storage options.

On the device's back will be 16-MP shooter with dual-LED flash and 4K video capture. At the front is a hefty 8-MP selfie snapper, which is expected to double as an iris scanner.

The Microsoft Surface Phone will allegedly see the light of day during the second quarter of next year.
