Mercedes-AMG has expanded its lineup with the introduction of the 53-series. The first three models — CLS 53, E 53 Coupe and E 53 Cabriolet — feature sporty performance and a mild hybrid powertrain.

All three 53-series models are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. There is also an EQ Boost starter-generator that is able boost performance with an additional 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The presence of a 48-volt electrical system, meanwhile, allows for further hybridization in the future.

The powertrain is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with an all-wheel-drive system. Performance-wise, the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 and the E 53 Cabriolet are able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in 4.4 seconds while the E53 Coupe is slightly faster at 4.3 seconds. All three have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.

In terms of design, the new 53-series models come with exterior design cues that allow them to stand out. The front fascia features the twin-blade radiator grille in silver chrome — typically seen in AMG-badged V8 models. Unlike the standard diamond radiator grille, the 53-series' central radiator features a black lattice pattern. The front bumper, meanwhile, features an A-wing design with black accents and a silver chrome front splitter.

Moreover, the redesigned rear now comes with a body-color lip spoiler as well as a diffuser insert and round, high-gloss chrome exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the 53-series models have a widescreen cockpit that is equipped with two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays. The infotainment system can be controlled via the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, the touchpad and controller in the center console and voice control. Other notable features include AMG-specific upholstery and badging for the sports seats, red seat belts, a carbon fiber interior trim and the AMG Performance steering wheel.

The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53, E 53 Coupe and E 53 Cabriolet will go on sale in late 2018. Pricing has not yet been announced.
