The classic adventure game "Maniac Mansion" has just been released on Steam.

PC Gamer reports that the classic game is 30 percent off starting Tuesday, Dec. 19. "Maniac Mansion" currently retails for £3.20 or $4.01. After Christmas at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST), the game will retail for £4.79 or $5.99.

Many gamers don't know this, but "Maniac Mansion" is the father of modern point-and-click adventure games like "Thimbleweed Park." Initially released in 1987, the game follows protagonist "Dave Miller" and his friends to rescue "Sandy" from the hands of a mad scientist.

"Maniac Mansion" was Lucasfilm Games' first ever release for the Commodore 64 and Apple II. Soon after its release, the game was made available for several other consoles like the IBM PC, the Amiga, the Atari ST, and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

According to sources, "Maniac Mansion" was critically acclaimed by reviewers who commended the game's graphics, cut-scenes, animation, and high level of detail. The game was even compared to movies such as "Psycho," "Friday the 13th," "The Addams Family," the cartoon "Scooby Doo," and even "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," presumably for its good blend of comedy and horror. As it is, "Maniac Mansion's" humor and cinematic storytelling were also praised by the American novelist and critic Orson Scott Card, who claimed that the game was compellingly good.

A sequel to "Maniac Mansion" was released in 1993 and was titled "Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle." A few years back, a re-master of "Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle" was in the works and was 80 percent complete. However, the game was cancelled days before LucasArts was sold to Disney in 2012.

Then, a re-mastered version of the game titled "Day of the Tentacle Remastered" was announced at the PlayStation Experience 2014. The game was released two years after in 2016 for the PC, PS4, PlayStation Vita, as well as Linux and OS X.
