iOS 11 news, updates: Tim Cook teases next OS update to include option to disable battery throttling

It looks like one of the future iOS 11 updates will include an important fix as Apple intentionally slows down the performance of older iPhone units. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed this week that an iOS 11 update will give the users an option to disable the battery performance throttling.

The Cupertino-based tech giant became the center of criticism as the users have learned that the reduced performance of their iPhone devices is due to Apple's decision to slow down the handsets as they get older. The company claims that the intentional slowing down of the phones is also for the benefit of the users, as certain issues may appear by the time the iPhone batteries finally depreciate. Nevertheless, iPhone owners would like to see their devices to work fast like they used to, thus the need for an iOS 11 update.

Cook revealed in an interview with ABC News that the iOS 11 update that will fix the slowed down iPhone performance will come this February through a developer preview. The public release of the said update is expected to roll out shortly after the beta launch.

"We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it's very, very transparent," Cook said. "This hasn't been done before." The iOS 11 update will specifically target the battery performance throttling in the iPhones, and Apple will give the users a choice to shut down this process and restore the usual CPU performance.

Before the New Year, Apple already issued a public apology in connection with the battery throttling performance in older iPhone models. The tech firm did promise to make necessary adjustments in the iOS settings to solve the problem, including the improvement in the Battery screen to list down more details regarding the device's battery condition. While the users will see if Apple's intentional power throttling process is running, it did not specify if an option to disable it will be included.

According to 9to5Mac, the upcoming iOS 11 update will decrease the chance of the iPhones automatically turning off because the CPU performance demands too much instantaneous voltage for the battery to provide. Also, the user will be able to use their iPhones at optimal speed once again. This is also a good decision from Apple itself, which has been subjected to several class lawsuits due to the iPhone battery throttling debacle.
