Hyundai introduced their next-generation fuel cell vehicle (FCV), Nexo, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. The hydrogen-powered crossover comes with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and an impressive electric driving range of 370 miles.
According to the South Korean automaker, Nexo will spearhead their plans to develop low-emission vehicles in line with their goal of introducing 18 eco-friendly models by 2025.
The new FCV is equipped with ADAS that will further enhance its potential for autonomous driving. Hyundai's industry-first blind-spot view monitor will show drivers the rear and sides of the Nexo when changing lanes. Wide-angle cameras show areas that are not typically seen through the traditional rearview mirror.
Lane following assist automatically adjusts steering to keep the Nexo centered in its lane while driving at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour (mph). Meanwhile, highway driving assist uses sensors and map data to automatically adjust the Nexo's speed in certain driving environments.
Last but not the least, the Nexo will be equipped with a remote start parking assistant, which will allow the fuel cell crossover to park and retrieve itself even without a driver inside. The Nexo will back itself into a parking spot with just the push of a button.
Aside from these advanced technologies, the Nexo features an innovative powertrain that is built into a lighter and more spacious architecture.
Compared to its predecessor, the Tucson FCEV, Nexo is 10.3 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and 1 inch lower. It has a smaller but more powerful 95-kW fuel cell battery alongside a 40-kW battery pack. The Nexo's electric motor delivers 160 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. This allows the fuel cell SUV to go from 0 to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds and have an estimated driving range of 370 miles.
The Hyundai Nexo FCV will be available in select markets, including California, later this year.
