Last year's Google Nexus smartphones — the Google Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X — were considered to be some of the best Android smartphones in the market when they were launched.

Now, Google is once again set to meet the consumer's expectations with another set of top-end Android smartphones, but with the lack of any official announcement, it still remains to be seen if they will be able to roll out a couple of winners this year.

There are several reports which have claimed that Google may be doing something different this year and that they will be rebranding their Nexus smartphones. According to reports, the previously rumored HTC-built Nexus Marlin and Nexus Sailfish will now apparently be referred to as the Google Pixel XL and the Google Pixel, respectively.

Despite the upcoming smartphone's new brand names, the devices themselves are expected to still contain some of the best hardware that modern technology can offer. The top-end Google Pixel XL is rumored to be coming with a large 5.5-inch Quad HD display and will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset. The processor will reportedly be paired with 4 GB of RAM, which should be a potent combination.

The smaller Google Pixel, on the other hand, is reportedly going to be coming with a smaller 5-inch Full HD display. It will also be sporting the same Snapdragon 820 processor, but is rumored to be coming with a smaller 3 GB of RAM. Both smartphones are believed to be coming with either Android 7.0 or 7.1 Nougat out of the box. There are currently no clues yet as to the device's overall design language, but both are expected to sport newly designed "Pixel" logos on their casings.

The rebranded 2016 Nexus devices are expected to be on par, if not exceed, the specs and performance of the latest Android smartphones in the market. Both devices are rumored to be launched in a few days, on Oct. 4 during a special Google Launch event.
