'Girl Meets World' season 2 spoilers: Love triangle set aside for Riley's science experiment in episode 26

Fans will have to wait until next year before they get to know what happens next in "Girl Meets World" season 2 now that Lucas already knows that Riley is still in love with him. In the previous episode, "Girl Meets New Year," Riley's secret was exposed just as the gang welcomed 2016.

Carter Matt believes that the happenings in this episode will surely change the season's direction when it goes back on air. However, the first episode of the Disney Channel series for next year, titled "Girl Meets STEM," doesn't promise to pick up where the show left off.

When "Girl Meets World" season 2 introduced the love triangle in "Girl Meets Texas," it did not continue the storyline until the midseason finale. So what fans can expect in the next episode are a buildup to big changes in Riley and Maya's friendship as well as their relationship with Lucas.

According to Realty Today, the show may end up saving the resolution for this dilemma in the show's third season. For episode 26 of the ongoing season, the series will follow Riley as she proves to the boys in her school that she can excel in a science experiment they believe she can't handle.

After this episode airs Jan. 8 on Disney Channel, the team behind the series will turn their complete attention to "Girl Meets World" season 3. In fact, work has already started for the upcoming season.

In their official Twitter account, the show's writers stated that the new season will be "a season of feelings." They pertained to the freshman run as "a season of friendship" while the current season, which has four more episodes to come, is all about growth.

Teasing what will happen in the last installments of "Girl Meets World" season 2, the writers tweeted that Riley will be "at war" while Mark Cuban from "Shark Tank" is guest-starring to "[bring] peace."

"Girl Meets World" season 2 returns on Jan. 8 with "Girl Meets STEM."
