'Gambit' movie release date, cast news: Production start delayed until March; Lizzy Caplan joins the cast in mystery role

"White House Down" actor Channing Tatum will star as Gambit in the upcoming "X-Men" spinoff. Columbia Pictures

More news regarding the long-delayed "Gambit" movie starring Channing Tatum have been coming up, especially regarding who else will be in it and when they will start filming. Contrary to the reports that production will commence in February next year, the mutant solo spinoff will instead start production in March.

Revealed by Omega Underground, the reason for the delay is unknown. However, with filming being scheduled to begin a month after its supposed production date, production is now expected to start from March until July or August next year. It is still believed that the mutant spinoff will be filming in New Orleans, Louisiana, staying faithful to the character's beginnings.

The "Gambit" movie has long been plagued by delays and exiting directors, but fortunately this year it has started to pick up steam. With director Gore Verbinski at the helm and a script overhaul, fans can be relieved that the mutant movie is finally getting off the ground.

Casting for the film is also being announced slowly but surely, the most recent one being "Masters of Sex" star Lizzy Caplan. Caplan's role in the film has yet to be revealed, but according to Variety, she will be playing the female lead alongside Tatum.

Many fans, however, have speculated that she could be portraying the titular character's love interest Bella Donna Boudreaux, a role that was originally going to be played by Lea Seydoux when she was announced to be part of the movie back in 2015. Bella Donna Boudreaux is both Gambit's enemy and lover, and member of the Assassins Guild.

Some character breakdowns for the movie have also surfaced previously, with a lot of major roles and potential sequels. Aside from the role of Bella Donna, there is also one particular description that seems to point at a big X-Men villain, Dr. Nathaniel Essex a.k.a Mr. Sinister, and it was rumored that Fox has its eyes on James Bond actor Daniel Craig to play the role.

The "Gambit" movie will premiere on Feb. 14, 2019.
