DJI Mavic Air release date, specs news: Mid-range drone to be announced on Jan. 23?

Will DJI introduce a new drone during the "Adventure Unfolds" event next week? DJI

DJI's newest drone, rumored to be called the Mavic Air, could be announced next week.

The Chinese drone maker recently sent out invitations to an event titled "Adventure Unfolds," which will be held in New York on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. EST. The announcement was made through a teaser video that was posted on Twitter. In the caption, DJI teased, "Something is coming... Join us for the next 'big' thing."

The teaser video does not actually reveal any specific information. Rather, it features macro shots of cells and synapses as well as sweeping scenes of the earth, wind and water. At the end of the clip, there are close-up shots of what may be DJI's newest product.

According to DroneDJ, there is reason to believe that the upcoming event will see the introduction of a brand-new drone. Reportedly called Mavic Air, it will be a smaller, lighter and faster version of the Mavic Pro.

Though there is no official confirmation from DJI, the publication uncovered an old forum post that relayed information from two purported employees of the company. They reportedly talked about two new DJI models that were coming soon.

The first product mentioned was the Mavic Air, described as "smaller than the current Mavic but still with folding arms," and the other was a "toy" model that was smaller than the Spark. Coincidentally, DJI unveiled the Tello, which fits the latter model's description, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this month.

Moreover, the fact that the Mavic series is DJI's only product range that actually unfolds also seems to fit with the "Adventure Unfolds" tagline of the upcoming event.

If reports are proven to be true, the Mavic Air could serve as a mid-range drone option for consumers. It will be suitable for those looking for a more capable model than the entry-level Spark ($399) but are hesitant to invest in the pricier Mavic Pro ($899).
