"Destiny 2" will be released next year. This is what the folks from Bungie wanted to let fans know via the latest edition of the United Kingdom-based Edge Magazine.

Thanks to the summary provided by Reddit user Mercules904, it was confirmed that the sequel is indeed the focus of the company with Luke Smith leading the development.

Smith is a long-time staff member in Bungie and was the director for "The Taken King" expansion pack released for the original game as well as the Vault of Glass raid.

These content were well-received by fans. With Smith on the helm, fans can bet that "Destiny 2" is in very good and capable hands.

Smith leading the charge for the production of the "Destiny" sequel is not news to many though. Earlier this year, Kotaku reported that he will take on the role and that "Destiny 2" is getting some sort of a "reboot."

No information was provided as to what to expect in the next iteration of the first-person shooter, but the fact that Kotaku was right about the Smith adds credence to their claim about the sequel being a "reboot."

Interestingly, last week saw the leak of a bunch of screens presumably from a "Destiny 2" preview suggesting that the game will be set in medieval times.

The artworks were found on the (now taken down) Behance profile of Aziz Dosmetov, an artist who worked on "The Taken King." Swords, shields and spears were featured in the images.

The leak suggests a complete turnaround for "Destiny" seeing that the first game featured highly developed weaponry.

Going back to the release date, "Destiny 2" went into development two years ago. It was not a surprise that it will be out next year as Bungie also announced early this year that the sequel will indeed see the light of day in 2017.

For now, the focus is on the "Rise of Iron" DLC (downloadable content) for "Destiny" set to be released on Sept. 20.
