Hi-Rez Studios recently announced a new game mode to their popular free-to-play hero shooter video game "Paladins: Champion of the Realm."

Similar to "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," the new game mode pitches 100 players in an expansive map until one or a team of Champions remain.

"Designed from the ground-up to be played in teams, players must work together to survive in Paladins: Battlegrounds," said Hi-Rez in a statement. "Supports struggle to keep their Front Liners alive, while Damage Champions let the bullets fly and Flanks look for any possible assassination.

"Players spawn into a massive map—over 300 times the square footage of a typical Paladins' Siege map. Then they hop onto their mounts and begin exploring, looting their way through more than four dozen outposts and tracking zeppelins that drop legendary gear."

In the new game mode, the round wouldn't stop until a victor is determined. In order to maintain the excitement, a deadly fog will surround the whole map. The fog will shrink over time until a small combat area remains, therefore participating players will have no choice but to tough it out and be the last Champion/team standing.

No actual release date has been announced by Hi-Rez yet as the "Paladins: Battlegrounds" is "still early in development." However, the new mode will be out this year, and will be released on PC and consoles.

The announcement of "Paladins: Battlegrounds" was made at the Hi-Rez Expo 2018. It's the "first-ever hero shooter battle royale," according to Hi-Rez, with a gameplay style of combining ability-driven combat with survival gameplay. Hi-Rez added that it what sets them apart from other "battle royale style" gameplays in other video games.

"Fortnite" has also added a free battle royal mode, which was introduced in September last year. "Warface" also added their own version, which was released in November.

A new Team Deathmatch mode was also announced in Paladins, as well as a new Champion called Moji. Players can try out these new updates in the game's public test server.
