Nokia's budget phone, the Nokia 2, will be getting a surprise Android 8.1 "Oreo" update soon.

According to Android Authority, the budget-friendly Nokia 2 will be getting the Android 8.1 "Oreo" update soon. This was confirmed by HMD Global's Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas on Twitter. As users know, the device currently runs Android 7.1.1 "Nougat."

Sarvikas' tweet noted that Nokia 2s with 1-gigabyte (GB) random access memory (RAM) will be able to support the Android 8.1 "Oreo" update release. Many of the Android Go memory management improvements will be integrated with the update. "Nokia 2 performance will only get better over time," said Sarvikas.

The Nokia 2 was originally planned to be released with the base Android 8.0 "Oreo" operating system but was bumped to the Android 8.1 to take advantage of the improved memory management and optimization.

The Nokia 2 was revealed in late October 2017 in India and most of Asia, and the U.S. in November. It sports a 5-inch IPS LCD screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The Nokia 2 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset, with a quad-core 1.3-gigahertz (GHz) Cortex-A7 central processing unit (CPU). The device has an internal memory of 8 GB, which is expandable up to 128 GB via a dedicated memory card slot.

The Nokia 2 may not be the best phone in terms of performance, but its budget price ($100) makes it a good entry-level device.

Speaking of the Android 8.0, OnePlus has just made the Android 8.0 "Oreo" Open Beta for their flagship, the 5T, available for users. OnePlus 5T owners can now download the "Oreo" beta for their devices with the latest security patch dated Dec. 1.

According to Tech 2, several tweaks were also added to the OnePlus 5T's operating system such as optimized app shortcut style, the option to upload photos to "Shot on OnePlus," a picture-in-picture or "PIP" mode for multiple video viewing or multitasking, an auto-fill support, smart text selection, and a new Quick Settings design, among others.

Older OnePlus models (3/3T) however, are not yet scheduled to receive the Android 8.0 "Oreo" update.
