'Teen Wolf' season 5 spoilers, casting news: Tyler Hoechlin no longer series regular

Tyler Hoechlin leaves Teen Wolf Season 5 MTV

The popular hit TV show "Teen Wolf" is set to air its fifth season this June 29, but it will do so without Tyler Hoechlin. MTV recently announced that the actor, who plays the show's Derek Hale, will no longer be a series regular. He will, however, have recurring appearances in the show.

According to a report by BuzzFeed, the actor will be making fewer appearances in "Teen Wolf" in order to pursue a career in movies. Prior to the supernatural teen drama, his only significant movie role was in "Road to Perdition" where he played son to Tom Hank's character.

Jeff Davis, co-creator of the show, spoke to MTV regarding the actor's decision, saying, "He said he felt like he was at a point in his career where he wanted to try new things, things that scare him, but wasn't quite ready to let go of the family he created on Teen Wolf."

The show runner also said, "We love him and miss him."

The character was given a decent send-off in the closing episodes of season 4, where Derek Hale could head off to Mexico with his new powers that enable him to transform into a full wolf instead of a regular werewolf.

Hoechlin won't be the first series regular to leave the show. Crystal Reed, who played Allison Argent, left the show in season 3 and her death scene is highly regarded as one of the highlights of the series. Colton Haynes left after two seasons and now stars as Roy Harper in The CW show, "Arrow."

Hoechlin is set to appear in the indie film "Undrafted" which will hit theaters sometime this year. He will also play a part in Richard Linklater's "That's What I'm Talking About," a film set to be released in 2016. Linklater is popular for his twelve-year film,"Boyhood" as well as the "Before..." series.
