Windows 10 news: Cortana now exclusive for Microsoft Edge browser and Bing search engine

Cortana on Windows 10 Microsoft

Microsoft announced recently that Cortana, their personal digital assistant, will only work with the Edge browser, thus all searches will be coming from its own Bing search engine.

The company announced the change with Cortana through its blog last April 28. Ryan Gavin, general manager of search and Cortana, said, "With Windows 10, we have invested in delivering comprehensive, end-to-end search capabilities that make Windows more personal, intuitive and helpful. The Cortana search box, in the bottom left of the Windows 10 taskbar, allows you to easily search across apps, documents, settings and the Web all with the help of your truly personal digital assistant."

"Starting today, to ensure we can deliver the integrated search experience designed for Windows 10, Microsoft Edge will be the only browser that will launch when you search from the Cortana box," Gavin added.

Microsoft wants its Windows 10 users to have a nice experience in using Cortana, and previously, by default, it will use Bing to do the searches and present the best results through its own browser, the Edge. However, third-party browser extensions have been diverting the browser and search engine to the user's own choice instead of the default ones. This prevents the personal digital assistant to provide a personalized and reliable search engine result. This also hinders its users from an "amazing experiencing" in Windows 10, as the company explained on its blog.

Gavin cited a "Pizza Hut" search as an example. Cortana will show the official website of the pizza maker, as well as the nearest branch near its user. Another example is a "Best Buy" search, and aside from the website of the store, Cortana will also be offering discount coupons currently available from the store.

The tech giant also mentioned that they are not preventing users from using their preferred search engine and internet browsers. Users can use any; however, Cortana will not be available to offers its assistance.

The change takes effect immediately.
