Love is a complicated thing, and if you're Christian and single, love becomes extra complicated. This is because being a Christian means that there are plenty of things that are non-negotiable. You may find yourself attracted to a non-Christian, but a problem with contradicting beliefs can be a big problem. Even if you're dating a Christian, temptation is always there. It's important not to rush through things and understand why you're still single. Perhaps, this is God's plan for you ... For now.
Dating Shouldn't Be Complicated
If God plans for you to meet the love of your life, the process shouldn't be complicated at all. There won't be any problems with commitments, beliefs, and faith. Remember that God has a set plan for you since you were born and He has probably picked the right husband/wife for you as well. If you believe that, then you must also believe that God won't choose a man that will give you a hard time.
One thing to consider is that maybe God is holding off on letting you meet your husband/wife because you are still not ready. Perhaps He wants to prepare you more for the married life, or maybe, He wants you to learn valuable lessons as a single Christian first.
This Isn't Missionary Dating
Being a Christian, one of the rules of dating is to date a fellow Christian. It's an easy concept but quite hard to follow for some people. This is because there are men/women out there who will pursue a connection with a non-Christian and believe that they can save them. What if the person doesn't convert? You would have wasted all the time and effort on someone who wasn't the right one for you after all.
What you need is someone who believes in the same things as you do. Let me rephrase that. What you need is someone who believes in the same God as you do. This is non-negotiable. You need someone will walk with you and bring you closer to God, not someone who will pull you away from Him. Hence, even if you feel a strong connection with someone, but he/she is not Christian, this person is probably not the one God planned for you to spend your life with.
Do Not Force It
Love must not be rushed nor forced. It should happen naturally. Song of Solomon 2:7 says, "Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires." This verse is pretty straightforward.
Yes, there might be peer pressure that makes you feel like you have to meet someone, get married, and build a family of your own. You see your friends getting married and having children, and often, this upsets you. However, when you are desperate to date and have a relationship with someone, that is when you start making the wrong decisions.
Bear in mind that a relationship is a precursor to marriage. You shouldn't just date anyone you like. This person must be someone who is husband or wife material based on what God wants.
Put All Your Trust in Him
When is Mr. Right or Ms. Right coming to your life? There's no clear answer, but for now, maybe this is the best. It is easy to grow impatient if your heart is bursting out of love that you are ready to give someone else. Nonetheless, you have to always remember that God is taking care of it for you. Find comfort in Jeremiah 29:11 – "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"
Why are you still single? We can keep thinking of reasons for that, but at some point, you just have to lift up that concern to the Lord. Believe that God has everything in order, including when to send the right man/woman your way and when the perfect time is. Even if it's 10, 20 or 30 years down the road, when you meet that person, rest-assured, this person will be worth the wait.
