The beginning of the end for Kevin (Justin Theroux) and company in "The Leftovers" season 3 will reportedly take place around April next year.
HBO head of programming Casey Bloys hinted a spring premiere for the final season of the hit television drama as the show is expected to help fill in the gap left by the delay of "Game of Thrones."
"The Leftovers" season 3 was delayed by HBO, citing an issue on the production and scheduling, but Bloys hinted a far more intriguing reason behind the hold-up.
"We had a slot, obviously, in the spring, where Game of Thrones was moving out of," Bloys teased during an interview with Indie Wire.
This suggests that "The Leftovers" season 3 will get the timeslot that the HBO juggernaut usually occupies. The delay of the latter also means it will not be an Emmy contender.
In turn, "The Leftovers" season 3 will take on the role that "Game of Thrones" has been playing on the award side of things. Indie Wire says that while Bloys does not expect the show to dominate, he also does not believe it will slump.
However, his confidence to put "The Leftovers" season 3 in a schedule where Emmy contenders are slotted in suggests that it will be TV Academy-material anyway.
The closing run of the series could very well be an exceptional one, which should be a fitting way to end the story of Kevin Garvey, making the longer wait worth it.
Although "The Leftovers" is yet to get an Emmy nod, it has a sizeable fanbase. Season 3 will likely conclude in June, around the same month Emmy ballots go out.
Not only does this give "The Leftovers" season 3 greater visibility, which could translate to awards and nominations, this also hints that the final season of the series will be the show's best run.
"The Leftovers" season 3 will bring fans to Australia where Kevin's father lives. Filming wrapped up back in September.
