'Switched at Birth' season 5 to premiere this April, will tackle season 4 finale

 ABC Family

"Switched at Birth" season 4 ended with an ambiguous finale as Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) receive a phone call that forced them to return home after spending nearly a year in China. Series creator Lizzy Weiss has now confirmed that the season 5 premiere will address what the call was about.

Weiss first posted a photo of the season 5 premiere's script via Twitter. The photo reveals that the premiere episode is going to be titled "The Call," which immediately lets fans know that the episode will revolve around the call that sent the girls back home. The Twitter post also reveals that season 5 will premiere sometime this April.

Speaking to the Wrap, Weiss also explained that the call was left ambiguous as the production team and writers are still working on what kind of twist they could deliver to the audience.

"Not everything is fleshed out, but there is a general plan," she explained when asked if they knew how the series would continue following the season 4 finale. "We had a million ideas for what the cliffhanger would be, and we may still use a couple of them. There are some stories that I still love and that we may still use."

There are speculations that the girls were called home because John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) are getting a divorce or the call may be related to an emergency regarding Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily's (Rachel Shenton) baby.

Weis also explained why it was important to feature a 10-month time jump at the very end of season 4. According to Weis, this would allow the show to realistically portray Bay as someone who managed to learn some Mandarin and become a tattoo artist and it was enough time to let Daphne get a job working in a clinic.
