'Star Wars: Episode IX' plot news: Rey's parents revealed? Kylo Ren lied in 'Last Jedi?'

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson sparks a ray of light on Rey's parentage.

The latest installment in the intergalactic franchise rocked the world in recent weeks, after Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) revealed that Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents were nothing but unknown junk traders who sold her off for drinking money.

It was a valuable information that Kylo Ren found out while they were telepathically connected by the Force. In an earlier interview with Johnson, he said that the struggling villain was sincere with his comments, which he said to lure Rey into the Dark Side.

"That's what Kylo sees and that's what he tells her and I think he's not lying in that moment. That's what he saw and she seems to believe it when she hears it," Johnson told Collider.

Fans thought it was the end of all the previous theories, that Rey may be a lost daughter for Han and Leia, Luke Skywalker, or even Obi-Wan Kenobi. They thought the simplest answer was the right one after all -- she was just a lost girl who happened to have the Force.

But in a more recent interview with Huffington Post, Johnson clarified that Rey's search for her parents is far from over.

"Anything's still open, and I'm not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it," he said.

While the revelation of Rey's parentage might have been a lie in "The Last Jedi," it was a very important scene for the writer-director. He compared it with how Luke (Mark Hamill) found out that his real father was Darth Vader back in the 1980 episode "The Empire Strikes Back."

Johnson said the easy thing for Rey would be to hear who her parents really are, so that she could find her place in the world. The hardest thing, however, would be to hear: "No, you're not going to get the answer. This is not going to define you. You're going to have to find your own place in this world."

Kylo wanted her to feel unsure and insecure, but Rey ended up choosing the right side after all. As to who her parents really are, looks like fans still have some two years to theorize before the next installment, "Episode IX," premieres in December 2019.
