Seagate has recently launched a massive portable hard drive. It has a 5 TB capacity (STDR500030), aside from able to bring it along anywhere one would go.

The American data storage company has formally announced its largest Backup Plus Portable Drive that is in line with its top-of-the-class BarraCuda 2.5-inch drive. It features the shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology, as well as its multi-tier caching (MTC) data management.

Regarding this product, Seagate said: "Consumers are creating more higher-resolution and higher volumes of content than ever before. From action cam enthusiasts to selfie lovers to doting parents who capture every milestone moment on their 4K smartphones, the need for even more space to store photos, movies, music and content—and take it on the go—is growing. While data storage demands are ever-increasing, so is the need to organize, centralize and back up that data."

Individuals who will get themselves the new BarraCuda 5 TB drive can customize a backup solution with the Seagate Dashboard software for easy synchronization for local, mobile, social media, and cloud backup. It works immediately on Windows-based PCs (Windows 7 or higher), while macOS X (10.9 version or higher) users will need to install an extra NTFS driver in order for it to work. It is also compatible with Apple iOS and Google Android mobile operating systems.

It has a sleek profile, just 20.5 mm thick, weighs 247 grams, uses an aluminum case for durability, and can quickly transfer files via its USB 3.0 connectivity. Computer systems with USB 2.0 will still be able to use a portable drive, it is backward compatible, although with much slower speeds. There are also different colors to choose from, such as black, silver, red and blue, to suit one's preference. AnandTech added that the company also offers an online 200 GB storage space for two years for new owners.

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5 TB drive will be available starting this month from consumer electronics resellers worldwide for an MSRP of $189.99. A 4 TB model is also available in the series.
