As it turns out, the political drama television show "Scandal" was only supposed to last for six seasons. The show is now currently on its seventh season. During an interview on "The Wendy Williams Show," one of the cast members, Bellamy Young, who plays Mellie Grant, revealed the outcome of the show if it had followed the intended original schedule by the show's writer and creator, Shonda Rhimes.
During the interview, Young revealed that she and Rhimes had a conversation over dinner about the current direction of the show's plot. Young stated that for season 6 of "Scandal," Rhimes had always known that it would conclude with the inauguration of a newly elected president. This happened indeed, with Young being elected into office. The seventh season kicked off 100 days after Mellie sat in the oval office, which makes predicting the ending much harder.
If Rhimes had followed her original plan, the show would have ended with Fitz Grant, played by Tony Goldwyn, making his exit as a resident of the White House. According to International Business Times, Rhimes decided to change this outcome due to the changes that have happened politically within the country. Had the show ended with Mellie as president, it would have left audiences in the dark as to what kind of nation leader she would be.
So now, fans of the show are seeing Mellie in action for one last hurrah but it is not looking good for her. Olivia, played by Kerry Washington, has been making her own political plots behind Mellie's back, which was in full display when she secretly put a bomb on the airplane of President Rashad. Ultimately, this resulted in President Rashad's death, which has sparked Mellie to demand for answers regarding the matter. Will Mellie find out the truth about Olivia's involvement with President Rashad's assassination?
The seventh and final season of "Scandal" airs every Thursday at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
