A new patent filed by Samsung may provide insight into the company's innovation plans for their future smartphones.

The patent filed with United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 6th was for the application called "Apps Edge."

The patent does not really state what the software will be used for, but according to PhoneArena, it can be used in "organizing and allowing quick access to frequently used applications" for edge phone models that have the distinct curved display.

The curve display on Samsung phones first appeared in Galaxy Note 4 Edge and then in Galaxy S6 Edge.

These gadgets use the side displays for information such as incoming calls, new messages, time and even weather updates.

But a new patent could mean that those side displays have more to offer and that Samsung is considering putting to good use those sides found specifically on its "Edge" models.

The technology could have several applications and one of them is photography, which was a particular aspect that researchers focused on, according to a report from Android Authority.

With the new feature, users can take a picture without using the buttons on screen; they can also switch to video mode or start the timer by pressing on a spot on the edge of the display.

Users can also navigate the options through the edges to suit their preference.

Gaming is another application for the technology that looks promising as it could allow users to turn their smartphones into a standard game controller, which then could take game controls off the screen.

It is just the right timing for Samsung to be exploring this technology as it could differentiate standard flat displays from curved displays, both of which will have new members come September.

The patent could arrive just in time for the rumored launch of the new Samsung devices. Fanatics will just have to wait and see for Samsung's next move.
