Is Google buying Twitter?

Will Twitter be under new management soon?

Strange as it may sound, rumors are floating around that there are various companies who are keen on acquiring the microblogging site Twitter. Despite a jump in shares (3.5%), one company has been unofficially named to be interested in acquiring Twitter – Google.

While it may not be surprising considering that Google has been expanding its products and services lineup, this is something that has yet to be confirmed (nor denied) by Google. As far as bids for Twitter is concerned, the company has remained silent on whether there has indeed been any bids coming their way.

But if reports are true that Twitter has hired some advisors to discourage any potential bid to acquire the social media site, this may suggest that any rumor (no matter how crazy it may sound) pertaining to a possible Twitter takeover will be pretty far off.

To date, Twitter has a market capitalization of roughly $33 billion. And despite the eye-popping price, two companies are reportedly very much interested in making a bid and Google is reportedly one of them.

But all that remains to be speculative since it has yet to be proven that Google has any plans of honing up its roster of companies. Moreover, there is no valid claim that Twitter is even thinking of selling seeing that there are no factual reports to prove that the company is even in the red.

Still, this rumor is a pretty serious topic to follow. Twitter is a popular and widely used medium in social media these days and surely its market value is expected to be off the charts.

The $33 billion value is already something companies such as Google may opt to pass on, the reality of it all is that Twitter, if ever they do sell, may want more than that. And they certainly have all the right to command a price, especially since they don't have any reason to sell. So is there any truth to the rumor? Probably not (for now).
