'Penny Dreadful' season 3 spoilers: Vanessa becomes weak under Seward's care

First look at "Penny Dreadful" season 3 Penny Dreadful/Facebook

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 won't air until next year but Showtime helps fans get by with a new photo from the upcoming season. The intriguing image invites bigger questions and excitement as it shows a vulnerable Vanessa, which fans aren't used to seeing.

In the promo image, Vanessa wears a straitjacket as she sheds tears and rests her head on Dr. Seward's lap. Vanessa doesn't look like she's getting better though and the psychiatrist is in charge of helping her fight the evils she can't come to defeat.

This is why some media outlets believe that she is doing the opposite instead. Whether or not she is sabotaging Vanessa mentally, Seward should show her true colors and intents in "Penny Dreadful" season 3 and it will be exciting to see the character be played by Patti LuPone again.

The award-winning Broadway superstar joined the show last season as a guest star for the character of Joan Clayton aka the Cut-Wife. The character was killed off shortly after but LuPone isn't going anywhere. Now, she will be back as Dr. Seward to be full-fledged series regular.

But LuPone won't be the only star to look forward to in "Penny Dreadful" season 3 as a slew of stars are joining the ensemble. The latest addition is Shazad Latif, who will breathe into life Dr. Henry Jekyll, a character popularized by Robert Louis Stevenson.

"A Million Ways to Die in the West" Wes Studi will also be on board as the "intense, enigmatic" Kaetenay, a Native American who will be revealed to be deeply linked to Ethan and one that will eventually become Sir Malcolm's ally.

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 also welcomes Christian Camargo, who will portray Dr. Alexander Sweet, a zoologist that will befriend Vanessa. Lastly, Jessica Barden will make her entrance as Justine, a young acolyte of Dorian and Lily.

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 premieres around May next year on Showtime.
